Secrets of Education: Emotional Intelligence | PaperHelp about Education

 

Understanding students' emotions may be the secret of education today. It is the opinion of Mateo Barrachina, Primary and Music Education teacher, who explains why emotional intelligence is the basis for educational change.

The emotional intelligence of students determines their ability to learn. Plato said it approximately 2,200 years ago. The concept of emotional intelligence appeared when American psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey defined it as a complex of several elements:

  • the ability to obtain and/or generate feelings when they facilitate thoughts;
  • the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge;
  • and the ability to control emotions to improve emotional and intellectual growth".

 Then Daniel Goleman, an American scientist, and journalist brought it closer to society in his book 'Emotional Intelligence', published in 1995 and where he defines it as "the ability to recognize our feelings and those of others, to motivate ourselves and to manage relationships adequately".

Is emotional intelligence applied in the classroom?

What can we as teachers do? How do I deal with my students? What emotions do I express to them? How do I address them? What is our daily classroom environment?

Interactions between human beings cannot be neutral. The fact of being close to another individual can make us grow or fall into the darkest of abysses. We have a child population with a high rate of school failure, with numerous learning difficulties, the stress in the face of exams and classmates, and dropping out of school.

All these issues cause a state of pessimism, apathy, or depression that puts their maturity as people between the ropes and destabilizes their emotional balance. It is just a word, but there is a big difference between "until you finish we are not going to the playground" and "come on, when you finish, we will go out to the playground". 

We share activities, knowledge, and content, prioritizing them before the mood of our students, without putting ourselves at their level and in their place. We avoid stopping time and expressing our feelings in the classroom.

We cannot ask our children to express what they feel and entrust us with their most important issues if during their childhood we have not been able to attend to their words, because, at that time, those were their most important issues. Knowing how to deal with our emotions is not a quick path, nor an easy one, which needs the union of schools and families, but it is the path that can bring us closer to personal success.

We have the theory in our hands; we need to put it into practice to make fundamental changes. At school, where children can feel understood, they can try to risk and get a positive experience and control the negative ones they can grow happy and harmonious.
